Dungarra Island project

Dungarra Island is situated near the mouth of the Barron River Cairns and is visited daily by many locals and tourist alike. In the past this 70 ha Island had been used for garbage dumping illegal squatting and non-prescribed burning, coupled with large outbreaks of weeds in some cases covering ½ ha. The owners of the land had an environmental management plan produced and key personnel at NQLMS have been implementing the EMP recommendations since 2008. NQLMS staff have;

  • Planted 7000 seedlings including maintenance over five years
  • Installed a 500 metre walking track
  • Undertaken vegetation enhancement activities over approximately 35 ha of the Island over five years
